Periodontitis

Periodontitis is an oral health condition in which the gum tissue becomes infected and inflamed, the bone loss is evident and the teeth can become mobile. As periodontitis is allowed to progress, the gum will recede and the roots will be exposed causing cold or hot sensitivity. Pockets may form between the teeth and gums.

Such cases can be easily prevented with regular visits to Lawrence Park Dentistry for cleanings and examinations. Clenching or grinding the teeth can cause damage to the gum and may contribute to the development of periodontal disease. In cases in which the bone has been lost, the solution is bone grafting. Soft tissue grafts may also be used to strengthen thin gums.

Periodontal flap surgery is used to reduce the pockets between the teeth and gums created by gum disease.
